ISLAMABAD — Chaos gripped digital networks across Pakistan Thursday afternoon as telecom regulators confirmed that a single selfie posted by actress Hania Amir caused widespread internet disruption. The selfie, described by analysts as “her face, again,” created an unprecedented traffic surge that forced the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to issue a national advisory.
"We’ve seen YouTube bans, TikTok bans, VPN blocks, but nothing prepared us for this," said PTA spokesperson Malahat Obaid at an emergency press briefing held just hours after the incident.
The image, which featured Amir "looking to the right for no clear reason," triggered mass online hysteria, with thousands attempting to like, comment, screenshot, overanalyze, and forward the photo simultaneously.
“Servers began crashing within 90 seconds,” said Malahat. “We thought it was a cyberattack. Turns out it was just another Thursday on Hania’s Instagram.”
Officials confirmed major bandwidth spikes across the country, particularly from areas identified as high-density ‘stan zones,’ including several university hostels and at least one corporate office in Lahore that had to declare a half-day.
One eyewitness, Sana Tariq, described her experience: “I opened Instagram during lunch, and by the time it loaded, my coworker had already printed the selfie and put it in a frame. Nobody asked her to.”
Local telecom companies scrambled to restore service, issuing vague texts about "technical upgrades" while quietly asking Hania Amir’s PR team for a 24-hour selfie cooldown.
Not everyone was affected equally. Rural areas remained largely functional, as one farmer in Balochistan noted, “Who’s Hania Amir? And what’s a selfie?”
The Prime Minister’s office has declined to comment on the selfie crisis, though one aide admitted their own internet was also “a little slow” and refused to elaborate further.
In related news, a Karachi man reportedly spent 6 hours crafting a comment for the selfie, only to be outliked by a fire emoji posted by someone named “@Momo_Boy_420.”
